Bob Moses / Back Down Music Video
A Week on the Road. One Music Video. Zero Green Screens.
The Grammy-nominated electronic duo Bob Moses needed a live performance music video for "Back Down," the lead single from their sophomore album Battle Lines on Domino Records. The song — what the band calls a "confused protest song" about the current state of America — needed a visual that felt as raw and urgent as the music itself. It was also the first time the band had ever appeared in one of their own videos, so it had to actually feel like them.
The approach was a high-low production model built around a week on tour. A bigger crew captured high-quality live footage from sold-out shows in San Francisco, Portland, and Vancouver, while director Subodh Samudre embedded with the band on the tour bus, camera in hand, capturing day-in-the-life footage in between. Black-and-white scenes from the road contrasted with the bright red-orange lights of the stage, giving the video an intimacy that a studio shoot never could. The project delivered a full music video plus a gallery of stills for social and promotion.
Impact: The video premiered exclusively on Dancing Astronaut. "Back Down" climbed radio charts nationwide and led to a live performance on Ellen. Battle Lines earned critical acclaim from Billboard, WNYC Soundcheck, and beyond — with Billboard calling it "a killer sophomore album."
